Clean up your act, keep our bush clean

We all understand the message take your rubbish with you, but if you are not sure see "Leave no Trace",  however there is some rubbish that we’re not so comfortable dealing with.

In particular our toileting waste. See this video for some great ideas.

One approach is to avoid the problem altogether. There are numerous apps that will find you nearby public toilets with a bit of planning ahead you can use these most of the time.

Check out these examples:-

But sometimes you just have to go and you might be hours or days from a public toilet. When this happens stop and think about the impact you are having on the local area. In all cases make sure that you are well away from:-

  • Possible campsites or picnic lunch areas
  • Water courses
  • Stock drinking or feeding areas

The next step depends on if you need number one or number two.

Number one

Urine is unlikely to have a long lasting impact, just find a discrete place. Ladies if you need to use some toilet paper, don’t leave it behind. It will not degrade for years, we have all seen paper blowing in the wind behind the nearest tree. Instead take it with you, a small ziplock bag will discreetly manage paper until you get to a disposal place. Remember urine is sterile so there is no issues carrying the ziplock bag around.

Number twos

This requires more effort. You can either dig a hole or use a portable toilet with you. A portable toilet is the best approach, these can be safely emptied and any of the many "RV dump points" found in most town. If you decide to dig a hole, make sure it is  deep.

If sitting over a hole is a bit too much, consider one of the many collapsing toilets.

Make sure that you bury you toilet paper at the bottom of the hole, give it a bit of a stir with a stick so that the paper gets wet and will degrade faster.
